“Because when science wins, we all win.”
– Pfizer Pharmaceuticals
One of my pet peeves is when people say they “believe in science” or that they “trust science”; or, conversely, when they are attacking people that are skeptical of things like vaccines or the narrative around “climate change” and they say these people or the current Administration are “anti-science”.
My question to these people is always the same:
‘When you say “science”, are you referring to the scientific method of empirical inquiry? Or are you referring to the scientific establishment that is by and large at the service of the State and of the international corporate and financial interests that essentially own the State?’
I rarely ever get an answer that isn’t a dodge of some kind, if I get an answer at all.
“Science” is a religion in the modern world, and its zealous followers will parrot the often contradictory statements of its lab coat-wearing “priests” with dogmatic faith in their “truth”. And the current crisis has increased this phenomena ten-fold.
In an interview with Stephen Colbert back on March 19th of this year, famed astrophysicist and TV celebrity scientist, Neil deGrasse Tyson had an interesting few words to say on the matter of “believing science”:
Neil deGrasse Tyson: What I was saying of this virus, I think we’re in the middle of a massive experiment worldwide. And that is…
Stephen Colbert: And we’re the guinea pigs?
Neil deGrasse Tyson: Uhh, aaah, maybe.. The experiment is, will people listen to scientists…
Will people listen to scientists? Will people trust “science”? And perhaps more importantly, should they?
A recent op-ed out of The New York Times entitled, “The Religious Right’s Hostility to Science Is Crippling Our Coronavirus Response”, essentially blames the allegedly dire situation of the pandemic in the United States on the “science denialism” of the American Christian evangelical community- a favorite scapegoat of the mainstream media. Now, I am certainly FAR from evangelical and am not particularly a fan of Protestantism in general. However, in general I wholeheartedly believe that these folks are RIGHT not to trust “science”.
Because I do not trust “science”.
As I essentially stated at the outset, when I read or hear the slogan “Believe in Science”, I either cringe, laugh or both. What does that even mean? I’m sure if you asked your run-of-the-mill “believer” they would talk about how ‘science says this or that’ and that we should ‘trust the experts’, partaking in various forms mental gymnastics speaking of the scientific method, scientists, and the modern scientific establishment as though they are interchangeable and essentially the same thing- which is complete nonsense.
But people believe it. A LOT of people.
And perhaps most dangerous of all, is the fact that “scientists” have become a new priest class whose word and authority must never be questioned. And what we seem to be seeing, with this “crisis” that has essentially a class of technocrats emerging to “save the day”. It will be these scientists out of big pharma and big tech and billionaire donors such as Bill Gates, and of course the various financial institutions and think tanks of International Capital, that will emerge as the “saviors” of mankind and whose wisdom will guide the public into a “better tomorrow”.
Recently, pharmaceutical giant Pfizer put out an ad that stated the following in a brilliant one-minute piece of marketing propaganda:
“At a time when things are most uncertain, we turn to the most certain thing there is- science.”
The ad then goes on to talk about how “science” can cure diseases, beat pandemics, etc., ending with the slogan “When science wins, we all win”.
But what does Pfizer mean when it says “science” and that “science will win”?
Pfizer is a massive conglomerate that over the years has been found guilty and penalized for a litany of unethical practices and outright criminal behavior, such as making false/misleading claims, drug/medical equipment safety violations, giving kickbacks and bribes, consumer protection violations, environmental violations, price-fixing/anti-competitive practices, and even employment discrimination.
Pfizer has a well-earned reputation for being one of the most ruthless and unethical pharmaceutical corporations in the world.. and yet it is THEIR “science”, that is going to save us.
It is THEIR “science” we should trust. A science that has created a mechanized for-profit health care system that at best “manages” disease, and at worst, makes and keeps people ill, and ultimately kills them after bleeding them dry..
And it is THEIR “science” that is now being given near-godlike power and authority by the State- and we should all be very, VERY worried.
WR-ALDA’S Blessings unto you and yours.
